Week 7: The Penguin Post – Kindergarten Weekly

Welcome to this week’s Penguin Post! This newsletter has been written by our students to share what the kindergarten have been learning and enjoying. It has been another busy and exciting week, with lots of hands-on activities, creativity, and preparation for our upcoming Sports Week.

This Week

Next week is Sports Week! All of the children have been placed into one of four teams and will take part in a variety of activities throughout the week, building up to our main Sports Day on Wednesday 17th.

On Monday, the kindergarten students will make cheering items to support their teams. They will also watch the opening games of Gaelic football before returning to their usual classes for the rest of the day.

On Tuesday, the kindergarten will take part in a fun food activity, making and tasting healthy treats such as chocolate balls, fruit salad, guacamole, and apples with peanut butter.

Wednesday 17th is the main Sports Day event. All parents are invited to attend. The morning session will take place from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. at the school field, where the kindergarten students will take part in events such as the egg and spoon race, water relays, long jump, high jump, and more.

In the afternoon, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., there will be a range of activities on the school lawn, including mini golf, croquet, basketball, archery, takraw, football, rugby, and baseball.

At 2:30 p.m., we will hold an awards ceremony to celebrate the day and present certificates, medals, and trophies.

Following Sports Week, there will be a short mid-term break on Thursday 18th and Friday 19th. We look forward to seeing you there.

Highlights from Last Week

• For their Friday trip, the kindergarten visited Sip Kao Rai (Queen’s Park), where they explored the playground and walked along the beach. This trip was a great opportunity for students to build confidence and practise their communication skills in a public setting.

  
  

  The playground slides were a particular highlight. Some were tall, long, and even dark, which challenged the students’ confidence. While not everyone chose to try the biggest slide, many did and were proud of themselves for doing so.

  
  

  After the playground, the group walked along the beach, where many students collected seashells.

  
  

• During Wednesday’s club, the kindergarten students explored colour mixing. They combined primary colours to create new ones, for example mixing red and blue to make purple. The children really enjoyed experimenting and seeing the results of their ideas.

  
  

• On Thursday we celebrated Teachers’ Day, which was a beautiful and well-organised event across the school. The kindergarten students joined the whole-school celebration and took part in the ceremony with great enthusiasm.

  
  

  It was wonderful to see our youngest learners engaging confidently alongside older students. A special mention goes to Sage, who performed in front of the entire school and did a fantastic job representing Kindergarten in 'Halio's Got Talent".

  
  

Classes from Last Week

Last week in Kindergarten, the students continued their classes, including Music, Hearts and Hands, Tales and Treasures, and Project Play.

In Music with Mr Tommy, the students participated in interactive songs such as I’m a Little Teapot. The kindergarteners were eager and engaged, joining in with both the singing and the actions.

In Tales and Treasures, led by Mrs Sara, the kindergarten explored different fruits, vegetables, and healthy foods. Firstly, they coloured printed fruits and vegetables. Secondly, the students crafted cardboard cakes, painting circular pieces of cardboard and decorating them to their liking. They used macaroni as candles and coloured rice as sprinkles.

Lastly, Mrs Sara prepared roti tawas for the kindergarteners to sample, while introducing them to the dish and a popular drink from Singapore.

Last week in Project Play with Miss Celden, the kindergarteners aimed to create glue “squishies” with support from some of the Hummingbirds students. The Big Kids also created glittery artwork using glue and glitter, and played a fun game where they passed facial expressions and actions from one friend to the next, encouraging observation and communication skills.

In Hearts and Hands with Mr Chad, the kindergarteners got to choose a story, and they selected Rapunzel. They listened to the story and explored new vocabulary from it, helping them to better understand the language and ideas within the story.
