Week 3: Kindergarten Weekly – Silver Shark Bites

Welcome to this week’s Silver Shark Bites.
This term, our Silver Sharks (year 6) are taking on the responsibility of writing our weekly Kindergarten newsletter. Each week, they will be gathering information, speaking to teachers and children, deciding what to report and writing the stories that we share with you. Teachers will help with editing where needed
There have also been some exciting changes in Kindergarten this term. Our new playground and mud kitchen area are now open, giving the children even more opportunities to explore, create, build, imagine and challenge themselves through play.
We have also adapted the way our Kindergarten classes are organised. Our older Kindergarten children, aged 5–6, now have their own classroom and learning space, allowing teachers to provide more focused learning and activities appropriate for this stage of their development. However, they still come together with our younger children for selected learning blocks and, importantly, for Deep Play.

This Week

This Friday the kindergarteners are going to Hua Hin Sam Phan Nam Floating Market. There they can walk around the stalls, see local vendors, feed the fish and have fun exploring.
In addition to that, the kindergarteners will also be having clubs on Thursday, where they will be learning to make Thai desserts. This is a great opportunity to learn about traditional Thai culture.
As well as all that, the kindergarteners will be going to our little farm, where they will learn about growing and harvesting.
Highlights from Last Week

Last week the kindergarteners enjoyed playing on the new playground and in the mud kitchen.
On the new playground, the kindergarteners played on the monkey bars, slides and the wobbly bridge. All the kindergarteners were brave and challenged themselves with the obstacles.
At the mud kitchen, they made mud pies and potions. They made mud pies by mixing water and sand together to make a paste and then putting it in a bowl. For potions, they mixed water and food colouring.
In their free time, they wore costumes, read books and played with kinetic sand. They also enjoyed drawing and colouring on the chalk wall.
The kindergarteners really liked playing on the swing and singing songs in Circle Time. The children even turned the playground into an airport and used leaves as tickets! They also really enjoyed being read to.
Swimming

Last week the kindergarteners went swimming, where they learnt fun activities such as freestyle, backstroke and diving.
When they arrived, they split into two groups. The five and six-year-olds were together and the three and four-year-olds were together.
The five and six-year-olds went first with two of the coaches and split into two smaller groups. In their lesson, their main focus was on backstroke and diving.
The three and four-year-olds went next. Their lesson was mainly centred around feeling comfortable in the water and going under, as well as water safety and learning the foundations of swimming.
After they finished, they did fun activities such as tag, families (where they pretend to be different family members) and horse riding (where they ride on the older children’s backs).
In the end, the kindergarteners learnt lots of fun new activities.
Clubs

In Fruit Skewers Club, children picked their fruit and put it on sticks. It was fun as the students learnt different fruit names, tastes and smells.
For the Planting Club, first they put soil into the holes of the egg carton, then split the garlic and shallots. They then put the pieces of garlic or shallot into the soil. All the children enjoyed it and had the experience of being a farmer.
Classes from Last Week

In Ms Celden’s class, the kindergarteners have been playing shop to improve skills such as basic money management and shopkeeping. They played games and role-played while learning literacy and numeracy skills.
In PE, the kindergarteners have been playing on an obstacle course and playing Knock the Pins. The kindergarteners had a great time.
In Music, the kindergarteners are being taught singing games and body percussion. The skills that they have been learning include social cooperation and body coordination by following simple instructions.
In Ms Sara’s class, the kindergarteners put charcoal in a wet bowl and then they put their pieces of paper in the wet bowl. The paper then became rainbow-coloured.
In Mr Chad’s class, Mr Chad did the Mystery Box to build their curiosity. Mr Chad put an item in the box and gave the children hints about the item. The children then had to guess what the item was. Next, the children found their own items and used new words and new expressions to give hints and guess each other’s items.
