Our Reading Circles

“Reading should not be presented to children as a chore, a duty. It should be offered as a gift.”

- Kate DiCamillo

Reading Circle is the heart of fostering a love of reading and getting lost in a book of their choice. With hundreds of books to choose from, children are encouraged to choose books that interest them. This provides a great time to know our students as readers by listening to them, hearing them read out loud and in turn, reading stories to them. Content is brought to life with activities such as using a tape measure to measure out the size of a dinosaur or creating a short drama on what they read. Students share stories and ideas from the books they read and are challenged to find their own ways to monitor their own reading progress. Ideas have included making a book detailing features of their stories, or creating a collection of bookmarks, or a ‘reading thermometer’ to track their progress.
